Let’s start with what is the definition of shooting sports. According to Britannica, shooting is considered a sport of gun marksmanship. It consists of firing at a target. There are various levels of competitions, from local competitions all the way up to the Olympics.
Formal target shooting dates back to the Greek Civilisation involving bow and arrow target shooting. It is believed that by the 10th century, shooting evolved as a social and recreational sport. Shooting clubs began to be formed in the 13th and 14th centuries. The first World Shooting Championships were started in 1897 with a French shooting club organising an international 300-metre rifle match to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Today the World Championship is held every four years. Also, shooting has been part of the Olympics since 1896.
What makes shooting a great sport is not just its history. Shooting has a wide range of categories one can participate in based on the gun equipment and the format of the competition.
